At the SMM (Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology) trade show in Hamburg, Scania (part of Traton, Volkswagen Group, which also owns MAN) unveiled its new, as well as the most advanced, marine engine in its range.
The DI13, that’s the name of the new model, is based on the Scania Super, an award-winning “Diesel of the Year 2023” engine developed to achieve the remarkable 50% efficiency target.
Unveiled in late 2021, it is natively designed to burn biofuels and to meet future emissions regulations, thanks in part to a new exhaust aftertreatment system.
These features have become the hallmark of the new marine engine, which focuses precisely on sustainability and fuel efficiency to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, which are directly proportional to the amount of fuel burned.
In this regard, Scania says it has improved consumption by up to 8 percent, or up to 6.7 liters of diesel fuel per hour at full load. 
Another key feature is versatility.
As its name implies, it is a 13-liter engine whose power output can vary in a range from 350 to 1050 hp, making it suitable for both propulsion and auxiliary use, with heavy and difficult loads or for light or medium duty or even hybrid use.
Thanks to dedicated exhaust gas treatment efforts inherited from the Scania Super, the engine complies with current IMO Tier III standards, i.e., the NOx emission regulation for diesel engines installed on ships built on or after January 1, 2016 operating in Emission Control Areas, which are significantly more stringent than the previous Tier II.
