Isle of Wight by electric in less than two hours

From Boats by Motor 2023, no. 33, September, pp. 146-147.

A new record has been set at 1 hour and 56 minutes for Round the Island, theround-the-Isle-of-Wight race in England, aboard an electric-powered boat. Bringing it to fruition was the SpiritBARTech35EF, a 35-foot electric foiler with a very small beam of just 2.3 meters, designed by Spirit Yachts and BAR Tech. The sleek and elegant appearance of the hull, made of materials such as titanium designed to make the boat light and fast on the water, is matched by the electric motor developed by BAR Tech. Propulsion is delegated to the motor located in the T-shaped foil at the stern and allows 30 knots of speed with a range of 100 nautical miles. There are six seats on board, but for the record, the boat was adapted with an open cockpit trim and a two-seat spider configuration. The previous record for rounding theIsle of Wight (a total distance of about 51 nautical miles) with an electric boat was about six hours, and BAR Tech had claimed it could more than halve it with its attempt. In the end, the record time recorded during the July 17 attempt with the SpiritBARTech35EF piloted by Simon Schofield and Ollie Pendleton, went far beyond expectations, falling below two hours. The limited-edition boat can be pre-ordered on the BAR Technologies website.

About the Isle of Wight

TheIsle of Wight, with an area of 381 square kilometers, is a county in England entirely coinciding with the island of the same name, which lies in the English Channel south of Southampton. The island’s landscapes are so diverse that it has earned the nickname “England in miniature.” The western part of the island is mainly rural, with the impressive coastline dominated by the famous limestone ridge, which runs the length of the island and ends in Needles Stack, one of the most admired and most photographed spots on the entire island. The rest of the island’s landscapes have great variety, probably the most interesting being the gentle slopes sloping down to the sea and the cliffs outcropping from the sea, which are spectacular and important for wildlife and subject to environmental protection. The south coast of the island faces the English Channel. The island is home to Britain’s smallest rail transport company, the Island Line IOW, which runs a route of about 13 km from the terminal at Ryde Pier to Shanklin along the eastern part of the island. Tourism still represents the island’s largest industry. Alongside traditional tourist attractions, vacations are developing that offer hiking trails or bicycle rides through the magnificent vistas theIsle of Wight offers. Almost every town or village offers hotels, hostels or campgrounds that can accommodate guests. The island then is famous for its annual music festival, which features major rock artists from around the world. Also held here every year since 1930 is the Round the Island Race, a one-day regatta around theIsle of Wight. The regatta regularly attracts more than 1,400 boats and about 15,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world.
